Kayla Patton

Why do you volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of Manhattan?
I volunteer at Boys and Girls Club because I was given the opportunity to through my employer to come and help the students that attend on emotional stabilization and other skills.

How long have you volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club?
I have volunteered with Boys and Girls club for about a year now.

What is your favorite part of volunteering?
My favorite part of volunteering is forming an bond with these children and watching them improve the longer I know them.

How has volunteering impacted your life?
Volunteering has impacted my life because it has taught me that a little patience goes a long way. Working with these students has helped me grow professionally more than I ever expected it to.

What are you future plans?
My future plans are to graduate with a bachelors in Social Work at Kansas State University, and hopefully work in the foster care system.

If you had to pick one program, activity or event that you enjoy most at Club, what would it be?
I enjoy doing community involvement activities. My favorite was making blankets. Everyone got into groups and helped each other cut the edges and tie them together until the blankets were complete. It was amazing watching everyone get interested in doing something good and helpful to community members they do not know.

What is your advice for youth in the community?
I grew up in a very poor, unstable home, and I was told I was talking about college from the time I was a little girl. I always wanted to make a better life for myself. So I worked hard to get good grades, graduated high school, and applied to K-State. I got in. I am now a senior about to graduate, and I have gotten further in my 4 years than I ever thought I would. My point is that no matter what situation you grew up in, there is always opportunity for you to do what you've always wanted, as long as you believe in yourself and work hard.
